SPOILERS about #kid90
Just finished watching Kid90 on Hulu about Soleil Moonfrye. This was really hard to watch. Because my all time favorite show is Punky Brewster (original 1980's show) and because I remember Soleil preaching against drugs, actually seeing her doing drugs, including drinking, was painful. I never heard about her in Hollywood, so much of what she looks back on came as a shock to me. Soleil had/has a potty mouth, for one. She also didn't value herself back in the 90's. It hurt to watch her float around searching for happiness, thinking she had it, and not really finding it. She doesn't mention the perp, but she was raped by someone she loved and trusted.
It was nice to see some of the famous actors she hung out with, especially David Arquette and Brian Austen Green. Both men seem so genuine, kind, and down to earth.
I just learned Soleil and her husband are divorcing after 22 years. This just makes me sadder.
I used to videotape my days all the time in the 90's and kept all my diaries, just like Soleil. So I feel some connection in terms of growing up in the same place during the same time, crushing on the same guys, etc. Bouncing around between a bunch of friends (without the drugs).
Soleil had several close friends commit suicide (many of them famous). It isn't until now that she really processed everything that took place 20 + years ago.
Why do I care about a stranger? I care about everyone. But Soleil meant more to me than any other actor. If you never watched Punky Brewster (original 1980's show), and you love and crave wholesomeness and a realistic look at issues through the lens of a good heart, it's the show for you.
I hope Soleil finds peace after opening the vault. It can be so painful to look back at your life and see things you thought were okay actually weren't.
