Once Saved Always Saved: An Unconditional Promise of God?

The first scripture at which we'll look in our study of the once saved, always saved doctrine is that of 1 John 2:24, which says, ..." IF that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you." According to Webster’s dictionary, the word "if" means "on condition that, in case that, granting that." With no conditions to be met, what need would God have to say "if?"
