34. Biblical People in Inscriptions

Omri (1 Kings 16:16, etc). A king of Israel (884-873 BC). The Mesha stele, lines 4-5, reads: *mry.mlk.ysr'l. “Omri was king of Israel.” An inscription of Tiglath-pileser III (below) reads: KUR.E-hu-um-ri-a "the land of Omri."

Gallio (Acts 18:12 etc). A portion of the Delphi Inscription from Delphi, Greece, dated January-August 52 A.D., reads: “Gallio, my fr[iend] an[d procon]cil.” It supports Luke’s chronology and recording of the events during Paul’s travels.

Jehucal son of Shelemiah (Jeremiah 37:3). An official of king Zedekiah of Judah (597-586 BC). A City of David bulla reads: yhwkl bn šlmyhw b[n] šby “Yehukal, [so]n of Shelemyahu, son of Shovi.”

Jehu (1 Kings 19:16, etc). A king of Israel (841-814 BC). The annals of Shalmaneser III (859-824 BC), col. 4, line 11, and the Kurba’il Statue, lines 29–30, read: ia-u-a mar hu-um-ri-i “Jehu, son of Omri” i.e., of the Omride dynasty.

Papyrus 75 contains most of Luke and John and is dated 175 to 225 A.D. In the account of the disciple John in 20:24-30, the risen Jesus says to Thomas: “Put your finger here; see my hands…Reach out your hand and put it into my side…”

Dead Sea Scroll 1QIsa(a) for Isaiah 53:11 reads: “After the suffering of his soul he will see light and be satisfied by his knowledge. The righteous one, my servant, will make many righteous, and he will bear their iniquities.”

42. Earthquake of 33 AD

In gullies of the Wadi Ze’elim, SW Dead Sea, an earthquake seismite layer can be seen that has been assigned to 31 +/- 4, which history specifies as 33 AD. This earthquake is recorded in Matthew 27:50-51 at the time when Jesus was being crucified.

Nathan-Melech (2 Kings 23:11). A court official of king Josiah of Judah (640-609 BC). A City of David bulla discovered in 2018 reads lntn mlk ‘bd hmlk “Belonging to Nathan-Melech, minister of the king.”

“The rest of the deeds of Hezekiah and all his might and how he made the pool and the conduit and brought water into the city, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?” (2 Kings 20:20; 2 Chronicles 32:30)

While excavating a tomb near Jerusalem in 1979, two silver scroll amulets dated to the 7th century B.C. were uncovered, which were found to have Numbers 6:24-26, providing evidence for the antiquity of the Pentateuch.

The planthopper Issus coeleoptratus nymph has real, mechanical, interdigitating gears near the top of its hindlegs. The purposeful arrangement of parts is reasonably and persuasively explained by reference to an intelligent cause.

Luke writes in 3:1 of a Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene. He is mentioned by Josephus in Antiquities 18.237, 19.275, 20.138, and in Greek inscriptions, which Titus Kennedy dates to no later than 29 AD, in agreement with Luke. (p.91)

90. James

In “Excavating the Evidence for Jesus,” Titus Kennedy discusses the significant evidence supporting the authenticity of the ossuary which has the inscription: Ya’akov bar Yosef akhui di Yeshua “James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus.” James was martyred in 62 AD.
