Jesus does not consider Himself to be above public debate. Many of us shy away from public debate because we are afraid of the ridicule heaped on us for our beliefs and opinions. Church-goers will also tell us not to “get political” so that they can disassociate themselves from our controversial stance. But Jesus does not shy away from a fight worth having. When Jesus was on trial, He was cunning, feisty, and firm.
The high priest asked Jesus about his disciples, and about his teaching.
“I’ve spoken to the world quite openly,” replied Jesus. “I always taught in the synagogues and in the Temple, where all the Judeans gather. I didn’t say anything in secret. Why are you asking me?”
John 18:19-20
Jesus is willing to call out a loaded question & avoid the trap. Many people consider Jesus to be non-resistant. But the dialogue in the account of His trial is anything but passive.
We should be more like Jesus. Truth is truth. Only the truth will set us free.
