In 1802, the Baptists in Danbury, CT, wrote President Thomas Jefferson and expressed fear that a growing federal government would come to threaten the free expression of religious speech.
Jefferson wrote them back and insisted that a “wall of separation exists between church and state.” In the context of the rest of his letter, it is unmistakable that Jefferson meant that government was intended to protect the free expression of religious speech, not restrict it.
Your beliefs and views are indeed meant to influence the spirit of American government. We don’t force it on people but our nation is special because of the very belief that because we are created beings, we have dignity, and with dignity come the unalienable rights we hold dear.
