“When my husband was alive, we survived on his salary and could buy food. But now I am alone, and I have no food at all.” — Susan

Her husband, a schoolteacher, died of HIV-related illness three years ago. Since then, Susan has been left to provide for her children in a region where famine and sickness like HIV, cholera, malaria, and typhoid have decimated communities.
