The Law is not a ladder.
Many people believe that God gave the Law, (the Torah), to Israel in order for her to attempt to climb into heaven through good works and discover the vanity of that pursuit. Not so.
The Torah was given as an identity for the people of God. How do you know who are the people of God? The people of God are recognized by how they keep Torah.
How do you recognize the people of God today? They are the people who have the Law of God written on their hearts and manifest in their deeds.
Christ did not come to abolish the Law but to fulfill it. The world needs to see the people of God.

@KarlGessler instead of speculating on the purpose of the law, it is defined in Rom 3:20 and 5:20 and Gal 3:24. (If anything at all was given as an "identity", it would be circumcision.)
